Week 7 Class Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We look forward to welcoming Julien to Room 8 this week, taking our number to 16 children.

I am currently working through the School Entry Assessments of our newer children. I will let parents know when these are complete and we will make a time to share this information with you and set learning goals for your child.

Sunbeam Kindergarten will be bringing a group of children to visit Room 8 on Thursday this week. We look forward to welcoming these children as they embark on their transition to school process.

We will be beginning our formal rehearsals for our Junior Showcase in the hall this week. It will be very exciting for the children to be rehearsing up on stage.

This week I will be focusing on getting the children’s costumes organised; Olivia, Jake, Colson, Luca M, Julien, Lily, Lizzy, Madison, Onkar and Grace will be pohutukawa trees (green t-shirts, black pants or leggings and handmade pohutukawa headgear), Jaime and Luca P will be kereru (white t-shirt, black leggings or pants, handmade wings and headgear), Josh will be the sun (big, yellow painted cardboard circles worn over shoulders), Charlie will be a gardener (t-shirt, overalls, cap, gumboots and watering can) and Sarah will be a baby Mollymawk gull (white t-shirt and and black leggings/pants and handmade wings and headgear). After her fantastic performance in the Poetry Competition, Lundon was selected to take a lead role and will play one of the four children in the performance.

I have been allocated $7 for each child’s costume, so hope to purchase the coloured t-shirts with this money. I am hoping most families will either have or be able to borrow a pair of black leggings or pants. I would greatly appreciate any offers of help to make the sun costume, the pohutukawa and bird headgear and the birds’ wings. Please let me know this week if you are able to assist in any way.

Father’s Day is coming up this weekend. Look out for a wee something for the Dads in your child’s reading folder J

Kind regards

Cara Wallace

Rich Maths Task

This week we used cubes to help us solve the following problem...

Howzat! Room 8's Cricket Coaching Session

This week we were lucky enough to attend a cricket coaching session with two coaches from Canterbury Cricket. We learnt how to catch the ball by 'making a book' with our hands and then 'giving the ball a hug'. Then we practised batting and fielding - great fun was had by all! Check out these awesome photos...

A whole lot of drama!

Our latest drama lessons saw the children experimenting with a 'mirroring' activity. The children worked in pairs or threes to mirror each others' movements.

Another Rich Maths Task...

Here are some photos of the children's responses to the following maths problem - fantastic thinking all round!
