Pizza - Bremner style!

Check out these fantastic looking pizzas Grace and her family made. They look SO delicious! I wonder how they partitioned the pizzas -  halves, quarters or maybe sixths?   Thank you for sharing this great photo with us.

Does anyone else have a photo of their homemade pizza to share?

Week 3 Class Newsletter

27.10.15
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and the lovely weather that went with it. We welcome Leo to Team Star this week. Please visit our class blog to review all the fun and learning that’s been going on this past week: www.room82015stalbans.blogspot.co.nz

This week we have our Grandparents’ Day and Folk Dancing Display on Thursday 29 October. Please remember to send your child along with a small plate of food on Thursday morning for our shared morning tea. The programme for the morning is as follows:

9-10am                  Grandparents invited into the classroom for a craft activity with the children.
10-10.30am           Shared morning tea with Team Star.
10.40-11.30am      Folk Dancing demonstration on the Astro Turf.

Parents are welcome to attend the Folk Dancing display. If it is wet the Folk Dancing demonstration will be cancelled but the ‘Grandparents’ part’, in the classrooms, will still be held.

We have now re-grouped the children in Team Star for Phonics, Writing and Maths. These are needs-based ability groups. Your child will work in a group with either Mrs Wallace, Miss Young, Miss Whyte or Mrs Sutherland. These groups are flexible and may change as the teachers deem necessary. A wonderful aspect of collaborative teaching is the ability for children to work in flexible groupings, with a variety of teachers and children, across different curriculum areas.

Upcoming Events:
Wednesday 28 October – Scholastic Book Club orders close, Montessori preschool visiting Room 8
Friday 30 October – Room 8 leading Junior Assembly, Calendar Art orders close, Sushi Day, Halloween Disco
Saturday 7 October – PTA Market Day
Friday 13 October – Show Weekend (no school)
Thursday 19 October – Y0/1 Athletic Sports Day

Have a great week!

Kind regards
Cara Wallace

Perfectly Partitioned Pizzas!

Yesterday the Room 8 children made paper pizzas, showing their favourite toppings on each quarter of their pizza. Today we made real pizzas, with the children choosing from pizza sauce, ham, pineapple and cheese toppings. After cooking, the children decided whether to partition their pizzas into halves or quarters before eating. Some even kept theirs whole! We certainly had a very 'yummy' time learning about fractions today.

I wonder if the children could help make pizzas for their families at home? How many equal pieces would you need to divide your pizza into to feed all the members of your family? Send me a photo of your homemade pizzas for the blog at: cara.wallace@stalbans.school.nz

The Lucky Book orders are due back at school on 28th October. Please let me know if you didn't receive an order form in your child's reading folder.

Showcase individual photos...

Here are some gorgeous photos of the children in their Showcase costumes taken by Lizzy's Dad, Nick. Thank you so much Nick for coming in to school and taking these very professional photos for us. Enjoy!

Class Newsletter, Week 2 Term 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The teachers and children have enjoyed a fantastic first week back for Term 4. We welcomed Monty to Team Star on Wednesday. Please visit our class blog to review all the fun and learning that’s been going on this past week: www.room82015stalbans.blogspot.co.nz

This week we will continue working on our Folk Dancing in preparation for our Grandparents’ Day and Folk Dancing Display on Thursday 29 October. Thank you to those families who have let us know numbers attending this event, it promises to be a lovely morning.

We began practising our Athletics skills on Thursday afternoon. This will continue in the lead up to our Junior School Athletic Sports. It would be great if the children could wear appropriate footwear please (i.e. running shoes), to support our daily Physical Education programme.

On Tuesday morning the children will be attending a show starring Craig Smith of ‘Wonky Donkey’ fame. Craig will be sharing his latest work and providing an hour of entertainment for the children. We will be going over to the hall at 9am for a 9.05am start, so please be at school on time on Tuesday.

The children’s Calendar Art work is now in a Room 8 folder in the school office. Should you wish to order a calendar, diary, notepad or pack of gift cards, please place your order at the office before this coming Friday. The theme of the children’s art is ‘My Family’. (This does not apply to Miss Young’s children.)

We will continue to explore fractions in maths this week. The children are now familiar with halves and quarters and we will continue to explore these concepts through a variety of hands-on activities. It would be great if you could do some fun fraction-based activities at home to support your child’s learning. Have a look at our blog for some ideas.

Upcoming Events:
Monday 26 October  - Labour Day (no school)
Thursday 29 October – Grandparents’ Day/Folk Dancing Display
Friday 30 October – Room 8 leading Junior Assembly, Calendar Art orders close, Sushi Day, Halloween Disco

Have a great week!

Kind regards

First Assembly for Term 4

Congratulations to Lily who received our Values Certificate and Lizzy who received our Achievement Certificate this week. We are very proud of you both.

More fractions...

This time the children were given two cups, one filled with water, and had to share the water equally between the two cups by pouring it back and forth as required.
